Subtitles out of sync in VLC

VLC can shift subtitles while you watch. That fixes tonight's film – but the delay is not saved into the file, so the next player (TV, Plex, phone) is wrong again.

Quick fix while watching

  • Windows/Linux: G makes subtitles appear earlier, H later – 50 ms per press.
  • macOS: H earlier, J later.
  • Exact value: Tools › Track Synchronization (Mac: Window › Track Synchronization) › Subtitle track synchronization, in seconds.

Tip: pause on a clear line of dialogue, note how far off it is, then type that value.

When a constant shift isn't enough

If the subtitles start right but drift further off as the film goes on, the frame rate differs (typically 23.976 vs 25 fps). A single delay can't fix that – see frame-rate conversion or use two-point sync.

If they are right, then suddenly off after a certain scene, the subtitle was made for a different cut. Shift from that line onwards.

Make it permanent

  1. Open the .srt in Cuemend (add the video too if you want auto-sync or a preview).
  2. Enter the offset you found in VLC, or use two-point sync (give the right time for an early and a late line), or let auto-sync match the subtitles to the film's audio.
  3. Save. Keep the same file name as the video so players pick it up.

Fix the file once, for every player. Cuemend shifts, syncs (also automatically to the film's audio), converts and repairs subtitle files – SRT, VTT, ASS/SSA, SUB, SBV, TTML/DFXP – in your browser. The video and subtitles stay on your computer. Every single-file tool is free; a $7 lifetime license adds one-click auto-sync apply, batch work on many files and two-language subtitles.

Questions and answers

Does VLC remember the subtitle delay?

Not per file. The setting is for the current playback.

Plex, Jellyfin or Kodi out of sync?

Fix the subtitle file itself as above; most of these players have only limited per-session offsets.
