Convert SRT to VTT (and VTT to SRT)
SRT is what TVs and desktop players read; WebVTT (.vtt) is what web players and HTML5 <track> need. The content is the same, but the time format and header differ – a simple rename doesn’t work.
Steps
- Open the .srt or .vtt file in Cuemend.
- In Save / convert, choose WebVTT or SRT.
- Choose the encoding (UTF-8 for web use) and press Save this file.
What changes
| SRT | WebVTT | |
|---|---|---|
| Header | none | WEBVTT |
| Times | 00:01:02,500 | 00:01:02.500 |
| Numbers | every cue is numbered | optional cue ids |
| Formatting | <i>, <b>, <font> | <i>, <b>, <u>, classes |
Italic and bold are kept. VTT positioning settings and SRT colour tags have no exact equivalent and are dropped when converting.

With a license, open a whole season, tick the files and use Save all ticked files as .zip.
Questions and answers
Does converting change the timing?
No – times are copied to the millisecond.
Can I add the VTT to an MP4?
Cuemend writes subtitle files; it does not re-mux video. Most web players load the .vtt as a separate track.
