Merge two subtitles: two languages, or join parts

“Merge” means two different things: showing two languages at the same time (great for learning a language), or joining the subtitles of a film that was split into two parts. Cuemend does both – and splits files too.

Open Cuemend – free

Two languages at once

  1. Open both subtitle files in Cuemend – both should fit the same video (sync them first if needed).
  2. Select the main language, go to Join / split / two languages and choose the second file.
  3. Choose the layout: both at the bottom (works in any player, as SRT) or second language at the top (ASS, for players such as VLC, mpv, Kodi, Plex). Choose italic or yellow for the second language.
  4. Create the file and save it.

Lines from the two files rarely start at exactly the same time. Cuemend cuts the timeline at every start and end so both languages stay on screen while they’re spoken. This feature needs a license.

Join CD1 + CD2

Open both parts, select part 1, choose part 2 and enter when part 2 starts in the full video (or leave it empty to append right after the last line). The joined file is added to the list.

Split a file

Enter a time; lines before it go to part 1, the rest to part 2 – optionally re-timed to start at 0:00.

Questions and answers

Does Netflix support dual subtitles?

Not natively; browser extensions add it. Cuemend makes dual-language subtitle files for videos you play locally.

Can I burn the subtitles into the video?

No – Cuemend writes subtitle files only.
