Extract subtitles from an MKV file

Many MKV files carry subtitles inside them. To edit them, sync them or use them with another video, you need them as a separate file. Cuemend lists the tracks and saves the text ones – the video stays on your disk.

Open Cuemend – free

Steps

  1. Open Cuemend and choose Open the video / audio with your MKV, WebM or MP4 file.
  2. All tracks are listed with codec and language. For each text subtitle track, press Extract as a subtitle file.
  3. The subtitles appear in the file list. Check or fix them, then save as SRT, ASS or VTT.

Which tracks work

TrackSupported
SRT / UTF-8 text (S_TEXT/UTF8)yes
ASS / SSAyes (styles kept when saved as ASS)
WebVTTyes
MP4 text (tx3g, mov_text)yes
PGS (Blu-ray), VobSub (DVD)no – pictures, need OCR

Large files

The file is read in slices; a multi-GB MKV is fine. Compressed (zlib) tracks are handled; very unusual header-stripping is too.

Questions and answers

Can Cuemend generate subtitles from speech?

No. It extracts subtitle tracks that already exist in the file. It does not transcribe or translate.

Is the video uploaded?

No – it is read from your disk by the page, which is blocked from making network connections.
